WebOS Goes Open Source, Isis Beefs Up Security With Gemalto, and Mobile Apps Hit 1 Million Mark

HP to Make WebOS Open Source
On Friday, Hewlett-Packard announced that it will officially release the WebOS software development platform to the open source community. HP hopes that this will jump-start development on the platform that it paid $1.2 billion for back in 2009, but which has since become increasingly irrelevant. If this works, new WebOS software and apps will begin making their way into the market, and even the most established mobile platforms, like Android, may start noticing the competition.

Following on the heels of Friday's announcement, it seems that HP plans to eventually re-enter the tablet market, even after the massive failure of the Touchpad. In an interview on Friday, HP CEO Meg Whitman stated that the company is continuing to develop tablet hardware, though she refused to be specific about when new tablets might be hitting the shelves.
